Discover Toiano: The Charm of an Ancient Ghost Village in Tuscany
Did you know that in Tuscany there are several ghost villages? These are abandoned and forgotten countries that still retain their charm and mystery intact.
In this article, we will dive into the history of Toiano.
Toiano is an ancient medieval village now uninhabited, counted among the most visited ghost villages of the region. The town received a special mention in the census of the “Places of the Heart” of the FAI (Fund for the Italian Environment) and was selected by Oliviero Toscani as a set for a photo contest.
Around 1500, Toiano experienced a period of true splendor, with a population of about 500 people. Over the centuries, however, the inhabitants began to leave the country in search of fortune in the big cities. With the advent of industrialization in the 1960s, this flow intensified further, leading to the complete desertification of Toiano.
In addition to his story of abandonment, Toiano is shrouded in a veil of mystery. It is the place where the media and tragic murder of Elvira Orlandini was committed, found dead on June 5, 1947 in the surrounding woods, only 22 years old. The perpetrator of this crime has never been identified.
Toiano, therefore, is not only a village with picturesque ruins but also a place full of stories and mysteries. Exploring its deserted streets means immersing yourself in a past full of life and, at the same time, in a present wrapped in the unique atmosphere of the Tuscan ghost villages.
